It has been a mere 5 years since Arctic Monkeys came out with their award winning album AM and in May, they released 'Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino'. A slightly unorthodox album which had mixed reviews.
However, arriving at FlyDSA Arena in Sheffield gave me nothing but excitement. There was a standing ovation as the band waltz on stage. Alex turner was looking sharp all suited up, rocking a buzz cut. As the anticipation of the first song rose, they opened up with ‘Four Out Of Five’. The roaring response was followed by a classic edition of 'Brianstorm'.
Although a little hesitant on where the night would take me, I was pleasantly surprised that the majority of the song they played were old. Being transported back to 2007, I was hearing 'Teddy Picker' and '505'. With my hair and clothes drenched in Carlsberg and the sight of a mosh pit beginning to occur right in front of me, as soon as it dropped in the '505' chorus I was in the midst of being washed away into the middle of around 15 Yorkshire lads singing at the top of their lungs.
As it slowly died down, there was a calmer atmosphere when Turner started to play the tune of ‘Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino’, ‘One Point Perspective’ and a chilled out piano version of ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ for the first time since his 2014 tour.
It was a strong set list with the band flicking back and forth between 00s hits about being a rowdy teenager getting into trouble whenever they could and the new, jazzier sound that transports you to an alternate universe. It ended strong with ‘Do I Wanna Know?’, ‘Pretty Visitors’ and ‘Arabella’ before they walked off stage to hear boisterous crowd screaming “ENCORE”. The Monkeys then casually made their last appearance singing ‘I bet that you look good on the dancefloor’ and ‘R U Mine’ as overpriced beers flung across the room.
- The band formed in 2002 in the suburbs of High Green, Sheffield
- Influences on 'Suck it and See' included Johnny Cash, George Jones and Patsy Cline
- Alex Turner was named the 16th 'Richest Brit Under 30'
- Alex Turner wrote song for the film 'Submarine'
- Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury in 2007 and 2013
