A star-studded audience, multiple electric performances and of course the token ‘awkward interview’ graced the British public’s screens on Wednesday night as the 2019 Brit awards unfolded. The quintessential awards show which celebrates the British music industry under the roof of the O2 Arena in London, featured live performances from Little Mix, George Ezra, Jorja Smith, Jess Glynne, and others, with a somewhat out-of-place opening performance of ‘The Greatest Show’ by Hugh Jackman.
In between the live entertainment, it was up to Jack Whitehall to fill the gaps, and it wouldn’t be the Brit Awards without some painfully awkward interview moments. This year, it was Little Mix who were left cringing after the British comedian called out Piers Morgan for criticising one of their photoshoots, and called him a ‘Dutty Wasteman’ during their live interview.
Beef aside, it was the music that stole the show. George Ezra performed a jazzy-soulful rendition of ‘Shotgun’ with The Hot 8 Brass Band which was fun (if a little random).
Jorja Smith sang a slow and soulful track off her debut album Lost & Found called ‘Don’t Watch Me Cry’. Jorja went on to win Female British Solo Artist, her second brit award following her Critics choice win last year.
Little Mix delivered an energetic performance of ‘Woman Like Me’ that whipped the audience up into a frenzy, followed by an equally impressive set by Calvin Harris, featuring flawless vocals by The Rag n’ Bone Man and appearances from Sam Smith and Dua Lipa.
Jess Glynne’s duet with H.E.R. was possibly one of the most talked about performances due to its original and creative staging which featured a myriad of women taking off their makeup in front of ring-lights and cameras. The message of self-confidence behind the song is definitely one we can get behind.
The 1975 was the second band to step onto the stage on Wednesday night, performing ‘Sincerity is Scary’ from their 2018 album ‘A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships’. The band, having just completed their UK tour, took home awards for Best British Group as well as Best British Band.
P!nk ended the show with an impressive finale, performing a mash up of her newest material including ‘Walk Me Home’, ‘Just Like Fire’ and ‘Try’. P!nk became the first ever female recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at this years awards.
